Pine Belt Spider Species
- Brown Recluse — Well-established across the Pine Belt. Found in undisturbed storage — boxes, closets, behind furniture, in shoes. Hattiesburg's older homes with cluttered garages and storage areas provide ideal harborage. Bites cause necrotic wounds requiring medical treatment.
- Southern Black Widow — Common in crawl spaces, garages, meter boxes, and outdoor structures. The DeSoto National Forest surrounding Hattiesburg maintains healthy black widow populations that wander into residential areas.
- Golden Silk Orbweaver — Large spiders building massive golden webs between trees and structures. Harmless but alarming due to size, and they accumulate on porches and exterior fixtures from spring through fall.
Spider Reduction
We reduce the insect prey base that attracts spiders, treat harborage areas with residual products, remove webs and egg sacs, and monitor brown recluse populations with sticky traps. Recluse elimination requires patience — 8-12 weeks of consistent monitoring to confirm population decline.
